The following tier list, which ranks all Pokémon available in FireRed and LeafGreen versions according to their viability in a Nuzlocke run, was provided by Reddit user u/samurott1 with permission. The original post can be viewed on Reddit here. This is version 6.0 of this tier list, updated on December 4, 2020.
An updated FireRed/LeafGreen Nuzlocke tier list for 2023 has been posted. Check it out here!

The following is a description of the tier system used, written by the list’s creator, u/samurott1.
This tier list ranks every single usable Pokémon (meaning that the Pokémon can be obtained before defeating the champion) from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen into six different tiers. Pokémon viability is not weighted by utility versus rarity, so rare Pokémon, such as Clefable and Tauros, will now be ranked according to their true quality.
The following describes each rank:
S tier: Pokémon in this tier are the best of the best; they do incredibly well during the game. Those residing in this tier may have a few flaws, but their positive traits more than make up for it.
A tier: Pokémon in this tier are great; they do very well during the game. Those residing in this tier have some flaws, but their positive traits compensate for it.
B tier: Pokémon in this tier are good; they do well during the game. Those residing in this tier have flaws, but their positive traits balance this out and then some.
C tier: Pokémon in this tier are solid to above average; they do pretty well during the game. Those residing in this tier have their flaws, but these are balanced out by their positive traits.
D tier: Pokémon in this tier are below average; they don’t do very well during the game. Those residing in this tier have several flaws, and their positive traits aren’t usually enough to balance this out.
E tier: Pokémon in this tier are pretty terrible; they do very little during the game. Those residing in this tier have too many flaws to justify their use, and their positive traits have trouble defining themselves.
Major Changes from Version 5.0:
- Moving Down
- Raichu and Dragonite have moved from A tier to B tier.
- Rapidash has moved from C tier to D tier.
- Farfetch’d has moved from D tier to E tier.
- Moving Up
- Raticate and Porygon have moved from D tier to C tier.
- Butterfree has moved from C tier to B tier.
